Requires Skills Premium
When defining skill levels with our Skills plugin that learners progress through during a course, you can assign a unique image to each level. You can also display the levels using a Dash widget in any block region. We have created ready-to-use design package, including a start image and additional level images. This allows learners to embark on a journey through the skill levels.
How to use our design packages
- Install our Skills Premium plugin as well as our Dash plugin.
- Download our free design package of Skill level images.
- Create a skill within your LMS: Site administration/Admin tools/Plugins/Skills
- Edit your skill and add level images for each defined level. Please note that each design package includes a limited number of levels, which may not align with your concept. In this case, you can either add or remove images or create your own.
- Assign this skill to your course and define what’s happening upon course completion.
- Assign this skill to an activity and define what’s happening upon activity completion.
- Integrate a Dash block into any block region to display skill progress to your students. Configure the Dash block by selecting the widget “Skill Level Visuals” and choosing the skill you have prepared. Administrators can opt to highlight the current skill level with a larger image or display all skill levels to show the user’s progress.

How to create your own designs
What size format should the files have?
We recommend to use a square format 500x500px.
What needs to be considered when designing skill level images
Skill level images are displayed in a circular format within the Dash widget. For this reason, avoid adding text subtitles, as they may be cropped. The main object or text should be centered with enough space around the edges.
Before creating your images, define the number of levels you need. Always start with Level 0, as this represents the starting point for students.
Design inspiration and tips
You can use simple numbering or color codes to distinguish different levels. Additionally, any images that represent progress – such as steps, arrows, or ascending shapes – are ideal for creating a sense of development as students advance to the next level.
Other tips for creating effective level images include:
- Animations or GIFs: If possible, use subtle animations to make higher levels feel more dynamic and rewarding.
- Thematic visuals: Use images or icons that match the theme of the skill (e.g., books for learning, gears for technical skills).
- Gradual complexity: Design images with increasing detail or complexity to visually reflect the progression through levels.
- Consistent style: Ensure all level images share a cohesive design style (e.g., consistent colors, shapes, or typography) to maintain visual harmony.
- Achievement symbols: Incorporate elements like stars, badges, or trophies to highlight milestones.
Which file types are best to use?
Use jpg, png or gif files.

Check out our product demo courses. We now have a dedicated plugin hub for each of our premium plugins. These hubs are product courses directly on our Moodle Demo Site. We offer demo courses on features and full showcases for inspiration and examples. Additionally, there are already several videos with instructions and information about the products. We are continuously expanding and adding more informational material to the hubs.
