Avatar setup
Create or import your avatars in the Site Administration interface.

If you have got a design package, you can import the ZIP file for each avatar via drag & drop. Please note, that you have to upload one ZIP file per avatar.

If you want to adjust your avatars, you can edit all fields such as name, description, secret information, or images.

You can adjust the preview image and add or remove additional media that will be shown to learners before they select an avatar. You can also modify the number of progression states, each of which uses its own image file.

Activity setup
After creating an Avatar activity, you can add header and footer texts as well as an empty-state message. With Avatar PRO, you can introduce gamified scarcity by limiting the availability of specific avatars. You can also control which avatars are displayed in the activity using tag-based restrictions.

Tag images
Visual Enhancements for Avatar Profiles
Administrators can upload custom tag images in the general settings of the Avatar plugin. When a tag is assigned to an avatar profile and a corresponding image exists, the system automatically displays the badge within the learner-facing avatar profile. Tags without a matching image will simply appear as text labels in the profile.
Tag badges are a powerful way to visually communicate categories, skills, themes, or unique characteristics. By assigning icons or badges to specific tags, you can enrich avatar profiles with meaningful visual cues. These badges appear dynamically in the avatar gallery based on the tags applied, allowing learners to instantly identify different character types, strengths, or stylistic attributes.

File size recommendations
- Avatar images
The size of your full-body avatars can be variable. We recommend a size of approx. 800x1000px - Avatar thumbnails
We recommend a size of approx. 500x500px - Additional media
For images that are showing the avatars in their environment or in other situations, we recommend approx. 1500x800px.
File type recommendations
- Use JPG for large images to reduce file size.
- Use PNG for images with transparent backgrounds (e.g., thumbnails or avatar images).
- For animated effects, GIFs can add vibrancy and engagement.
Design tips
Avatar thumbnails
There are virtually no limits to your creativity. Thumbnails appear once a user has selected an avatar, and —with Avatar PRO — also in the popover region. In most cases, a simple portrait or headshot works best, ensuring the thumbnail remains clear and recognizable at smaller sizes.
Transparent backgrounds are a proven choice, but you can also design avatars with full backgrounds or even custom shapes — for example, circular designs that create a clean, uniform look in the “My avatars” interface.
Avatar images
For the avatar images themselves, full-body designs with transparent backgrounds tend to work especially well. Animated GIFs are also possible, adding extra personality and motion to your avatars. Of course, you can design custom backgrounds or shapes if you prefer a more stylized look.
It’s important to decide beforehand how many progression levels you want to use — and these can even vary from one avatar to another. What matters most is that each level shows a clear visual development. This progression brings the playful, game-like sense of advancement to life and keeps learners motivated as they move forward.
Animation states
The animation states can be animated GIFs, but they can also be simple images that show the avatar in action, in a different environment, with friends, or with additional visual details — depending on your creative concept. You can also choose to omit animation states entirely if you prefer a simpler design. Avatar progression can be expressed solely through the main avatar images.
Animation states are an optional way to enrich your avatars with more visual storytelling and convey additional content or personality through imagery.
Gallery preview image
The gallery preview image is shown before an avatar is selected, so it should spark curiosity. It can simply be the thumbnail or a different variation of the avatar. Animations are also possible — just keep in mind that all available avatars in the activity will be displayed side by side in the gallery (unless only one avatar is available).
Once again, feel free to get creative. Transparent backgrounds usually work best for busier or more detailed avatar designs, helping them stand out cleanly in the gallery view.
Gallery – additional media
Additional media shown in the gallery are images that users can see before selecting an avatar. For that reason, you should avoid revealing any secrets or elements meant to be discovered only after the avatar has been chosen. However, you can use these images to tease what’s coming and spark curiosity.
Possible options include contextual images related to the avatar’s story or environment — or even previews of the progression levels, if you don’t intend to keep those hidden.
