Compose
Build attractive Moodle pages — legible and accessible by default.
- €299 / year
- Moodle 4.5 LTS and 5.1 to 5.3
- Runs on the free Dash block
Key feature 01 / 03
Page-building widgets
Build landing pages, dashboards and course fronts from Dash blocks, without writing HTML. Each widget appears as a Dash block layout and is configured inline on the page.
Key feature 02 / 03
One design language
Apply the site-wide style Modern clean and choose a branding pattern once. Your brand colours appear next to every colour picker; optionally the style extends to the rest of Moodle.
Key feature 03 / 03
Accessible by default
Wherever text sits on a colour, the editor shows a live WCAG rating and can pick the most readable text colour. Over images, an overlay control keeps text readable.
Compose at a glance
An edition of Dash for page design
Compose adds visual page-building widgets on top of the free Dash block. It needs no Dash plan and runs on Moodle 4.5 LTS and Moodle 5.1 to 5.3, including Moodle Workplace.
Everything about Compose
Overview
Attractive pages, legible by default
Compose bundles visual page-building widgets — hero, slider, tiles, accordion and footer, plus content pages — into one installable product on top of the free Dash block. Use it to compose landing pages, dashboards and course fronts without writing HTML.
Every widget speaks one design language chosen once for the site, with a shared colour palette and built-in legibility guard rails. Compose is an edition of Dash: it needs only the free Dash block, no Dash plan, and has no Workplace or tenant dependency.

One slide becomes a hero, two or more a slider.
Per slide: title, kicker, body, background image with overlay, text colour, alignment and five content positions, a primary and an optional secondary call to action, and entrance animations (fade, slide, zoom). Section heights from 50 to 100 vh; autoplay, arrows and indicators for sliders. Optional info panels with icon, title and link can overlap the bottom edge. Slides and panels can be limited to roles or cohorts.
A responsive grid of linked tiles with icon, figure or image.
Basic, image and banner styles.
Collapsible content in three layouts.
Split (list with a changing illustration), stacked Bootstrap accordion, or vertical panels that expand on click. Per item: title, body, icon, colours, background image with overlay, an optional button and visibility for selected roles or cohorts.
A complete site footer in five layouts – menus from Moodle or Union.
Brand, address, free text, up to six social icons, partner logos, footnote and copyright bar. Up to three menu columns from the custom menu, Moodle’s core footer, recent or starred courses, the user menu or a static link list. Five layouts, background styles and eight top decorations.
Show slides, tiles and accordion items to selected roles or cohorts.
Tailors what people see – for example a welcome tile for new learners. It is not access control: a role counts wherever the user holds it.
Content pages with their own URL, a header, a table of contents and nesting.
Each page has a header in two styles (solid band with an optional pattern, or a header image the content overlaps), a built-in editor and two block regions. The table of contents is generated from the headings. Pages can be nested with clean URLs like /p/about/team and can add themselves to a Union smart menu.
The Compose look and three templates for C4L Author content.
Content made with C4L Author gets the Compose style, plus templates for a course presentation, a syllabus and corporate training.
Each add-on has its own switch, settings and uninstall.
Switch a widget off and it is no longer offered; switch Pages off and its pages answer as if they did not exist.
Modern clean.
Every widget follows the chosen style. Optionally the style is applied to the rest of Moodle, so Moodle’s own surfaces, cards and controls match.
Squared, rounded bars or none.
The shape the widgets draw their decoration from, independent of the style.
Your brand colours as swatches next to every colour picker.
Outfit, Space Grotesk and Space Mono included.
A WCAG badge wherever text sits on a colour.
The legibility target is WCAG AA (4.5:1, default) or AAA (7:1). The badge is advisory and never blocks saving; the editor can pick the most readable text colour for you.
An overlay control keeps text on images readable.
The editor suggests an overlay strong enough for the chosen text colour.
Keyboard navigation, ARIA roles and reduced motion.
Arrow keys cycle slides; autoplay pauses on hover, focus, off-screen and tab-away. With reduced motion, animations and autoplay stop.
Smart menus, static pages and footer suppression in the Compose footer.
With Union installed, a footer menu column can show a Union smart menu (with its access rules) or all enabled static pages, and the footer honours Union’s footer suppression settings. Without Union, these options simply do not appear.

Dashboards
Dashboards and course fronts

Site footer
A branded site footer
Brand, menus, address, social icons and partner logos in one footer — no theme override required.
Tech & compliance
Running it
Requirements
Moodle 4.5 LTS or Moodle 5.1 to 5.3, including Moodle Workplace, and the Dash block 2.7 or later (block_dash). No Dash plan and no local_dash required. Moodle 5.0 has reached its end of life and is not supported.
Installation & updates
Install the Dash block, then Compose with its widgets, and run the Moodle upgrade. Use the stable branch for your Moodle version (4.5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3).
Reviewing it
Data protection & hosting
Your data stays in your Moodle. Compose runs entirely inside your Moodle site and stores its data in your Moodle database and file storage, on your own server. bdecent does not run a cloud service for it, and the plugin never contacts bdecent: no licence checks, no telemetry, no usage tracking. Access is controlled by Moodle roles and capabilities, so only the people you authorise can see or change it.
Accessibility & license
Compose is built with Moodle's own templates and the components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours, fonts and accessibility settings. It aims at WCAG AA or AAA legibility, with ARIA roles and support for reduced motion. Spotted a barrier? Tell us and we fix it with priority. Open source under GPLv3, the same licence as Moodle.
