Whiteboard 1.1: embed boards from Miro, TaskCards and more – by link and for every group

Whiteboard 1.1 embeds boards from Miro, TaskCards, Collaboard and other whiteboard services in your course – teachers paste the board link, and groups or single students can get boards of their own.

Runs on
Moodle 4.5 – 5.3

Whiteboard embeds a board of an online whiteboard service, such as Miro or TaskCards, in your Moodle course, so students find it where they find everything else. It does not come with a whiteboard of its own: you create and share the board in the service you already use, and everything on it stays there. Version 1.1 is a thorough update: teachers simply paste a link, groups and single students can have boards of their own, and administrators decide which whiteboard services are used – including further services they add themselves.

New 01 / 11

Paste a link

Copy the link of a board, or its embed code, and paste it – no more choosing a type and looking for a board ID. Below the field, you see which services your site supports. Existing whiteboards keep their boards.

Boards for groups and single students

On the new Boards page of a whiteboard, give each group a board of its own. In group mode, students see the board of their group, and you switch between the groups with Moodle’s group selector. A user board replaces the board of the group for a single student – much like the overrides of an assignment.

Each group sees its own board

New 03 / 11

Theatre mode

Nothing but the board, its name and buttons to open it in a new tab and to exit – for working on a large board.

Theatre mode: nothing but the board

Improved 04 / 11

Better in the page

Boards use the height of the window and have a link to open them in a new tab. Miro boards show right away, without a preview that has to be clicked first.

Improved 05 / 11

Description on the course page

“Display description on course page” now works, and Whiteboard counts as a collaboration activity.

New 06 / 11

Whiteboard services

Under Site administration › Plugins › Activity modules › Whiteboard, choose which services teachers can use. New sites start with Miro, TaskCards, Collaboard and Conceptboard.

Administrators choose the whiteboard services

New 07 / 11

Add further services yourself

Name, the beginnings of its board links, link parameters and whether its boards are shown in the page or in a new tab – no changes to the plugin needed. Export and import services as JSON to share them between sites.

Upgrade 08 / 11

Conceptboard opens in a new tab

Conceptboard no longer allows other websites to show its boards, so its boards now open in a new tab.

Platform 09 / 11

Moodle 4.5 to 5.3

Moodle 4.5 is now the minimum. On Moodle 5, the list of whiteboards leads to the activities overview.

Quality 10 / 11

Safe, private, documented

Board links are checked before they are shown; user boards are backed up with user data, deleted by the course reset and covered by the privacy API. Guides for administrators, teachers, students and developers come with the plugin and can be read in the Documentation Center (tool_mdocs).

Upgrade 11 / 11

Upgrading from 1.0

Existing whiteboards keep working. Miro and Conceptboard stay disabled where you had disabled them; Collaboard and TaskCards are added and enabled.

Whiteboard is free. Teachers need an account with a whiteboard service for their boards. Thanks to everyone who reported issues and asked for more whiteboard services.
