Course creators can customize navigation to suit their needs. While in sequential navigation the mandatory elements block access to subsequent content, free navigation allows students to skip mandatory elements and view all content before completing the mandatory element. In combination with an appropriate completion condition, the mandatory element remains a requirement for activity completion. This way, students can browse freely through the course without being blocked by mandatory elements or simply consume the content if the completion requirement is not relevant to them.

The navigation within a Content Designer activity is further influenced by whether learners are required to manually complete each element or if chapters are marked as complete automatically. Mandatory elements, of course, receive special treatment to ensure their importance is maintained.
